Start-Up Stories – RK Vodka

The alcohol market is full of new and innovative products, with new drinks popping up everywhere nearly every week! But how can a new brand stand out? This week we spoke to Kiron Phillips, the founder of RK Vodka. He gives us a key insight in to his luxury vodka and the start-up life…

What is RK Vodka?

RK Vodka is a British boutique brand that embodies a traditional distillation process a premium, modern brand.

There are hundreds of Vodkas to choose from, what makes you guys different?

Our product is vastly different from the rest, we use English sugar beet to make our vodka. It is only distilled once and un-filtered. It is a common misconception that you need to filter vodka multiple times to achieve a high quality. If you think about it, the more filtrations required it’s often because of poor quality. Our product is of such a high quality that we don’t need to filter it for it to be smooth. From a brand perspective we don’t stock mainstream outlets such as supermarkets, we work directly with venues and specialist outlets to provide a more bespoke service.  We offer social media support to all of our clients. We also have an in house mixologist to help with bespoke best serves and cocktails for each individual client. RK is more than just a bottle of vodka.

When did you decide to start your own business? Was it what you expected?

I decided to start by own business during my time at University. I graduated from Harper Adams University and it was here that I discovered my love for business and also the importance of supporting British farms.

Did you have previous FMCG experience or was this a new avenue for you?

It was a new avenue for me, my previous experience was in promotional merchandise.

Did your experience in promotional merchandise benefit you when starting the business?

It made me realise that I wanted to work for myself and have the freedom to utilise my ideas.

“I also learnt a lot about branding and that actually the brand is more important than the product.”

If we could combine a brilliant brand with a luxury product then that would be great!

If you had to give one piece of advice to fellow entrepreneurs, what would it be?

Be patient! Each day something new happens that can open up doors to other opportunities. It only takes one person to take your business to the next level.

What do you love most about your job? I love seeing peoples reactions when they try our product for the first time.

What’s one thing people should know about the spirits industry? It’s hard to compete with the global brands because they do a very good job of keeping us smaller guys out, so you have to be creative in what you can offer that the big companies can’t.

Where can people find your awesome Vodka?

We operate our own online store that enables people to choose from a selection of wax seals to personalise their bottle even further.

What does the future look like at RK Vodka?

We are looking to continue to grow. The aim is to get into more chains and also expand into some foreign markets.
