Alcohol Sales Continue to Rise, Despite Growing Health Concerns
The alcohol category within the UK has skyrocketed in the last year, a special report by IRI has stated that alcohol is worth £16.1bn in value sales to the economy.
Despite many health concerns over the years, alcohol is excelling. It’s the top macro category in the UK, ‘with overall euro sales of €18,2bn’. There seems to be growth across the board, with sparkling wine growing by 11% and beer having a growth of £270m. Wholistically, alcohol has had a Growth of 4.4% y-o-y in the UK last year!
There are a range of reasons as to why alcohol has had continued growth, one being that craft brewing has taken the UK by storm. The Guardian reported that, back in 2016, ‘Over 300 new breweries were launched in the UK’. The likes of BrewDog have had huge successes in craft brewing, along with start-ups like ShinDigger BrewingCo. and Bad Co.
However, alcohol isn’t the only category smashing expectations. For the first time, mineral water has outperformed cola! There’s no doubt that part of this is due to consumers shift to healthy eating/drinking. IRI also reported that ‘smoothies are also growing by +20% in litres and by +30% in value, juice smoothies have gained sales by almost £46m in the latest year’. The sugar tax could also be affecting this growth, why buy a can of pop for the same price as a premium smoothie? Or just go for the cheaper alternative: water. Either way, numbers don’t lie, so if cola is expected to come out on top they need to bring something new to the table. Coca-Cola are already trying to get ahead by introducing more flavours to their diet/ sugar-free lines. This includes ‘Exotic Mango’ and ‘Feisty Cherry’ Diet Coke and Peach Coke Zero. Only time will tell if this is going to benefit Coke as much as they’re hoping.
Were you surprised by this? Will water continue it’s rise?
